Ceiling sconce – were used to illuminate large areas and candles was stabbed pieces of wood or metal and placed on the ceiling to small areas. Today we have the luxury to choose whether we want sconces holding candles or use light bulbs and electricity, but unless they are installed in the correct position, they can be an eyesore, no matter how much you paid for them.
Generally, you should install a ceiling sconce not less than 5 meters to 5 and 1/2 meters from the floor. There are exceptions to this rule, of course. At a very high ceiling, you might want to go a bit higher to supplement a piece of art or to balance, or if you install sconces on the ceiling with stairs. What you should avoid is placing a sconce where the average person looking bulb that destroys the soft look, one sconce is supposed to create. When in doubt, measure the ceiling to find the midpoint and hang your sconce there as long as it is not less than 5 meters from the floor.
While it used to be a rule of thumb to install ceiling sconce in pairs, that’s not the case anymore. A single sconce can be very dramatic and allows light to an area that does not allow for a ceiling light or a floor lamp. It is much easier to install a sconce on a ceiling that already has wires in it, so if you are building a new home, you should plan ahead and get your electrician put in the right lines. Consider adding an attenuation feature of ceiling switches to create a dramatic look or a romantic look.
